nine weeks to go, and starting to think a little more about Italy

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

I’ve just realised that it will be April next week and that means that the time till our trip is getting shorter…

A few more loose ends have been tied and there is only one accommodation left to do – a couple of nights in Rome. This should be sorted out soon and then we’re all done except for local transport, but that will happen when we’re there. Really looking forward to visiting Italy again and remembering the wonderful time we spent there last year. Getting back to the food, people, places, history and seeing lots of new things will be fun. Must try and learn a little more of the language so I feel more comfortable when interacting and we’ll have to start working on our fitness so that we’ll be able to cope with all the walking we’ve got planned.

One adventure we did have was booking flights from Barcelona to Rome. The prices advertised online are cheap enough but once you start the booking process, they can triple before you finally submit your credit card details. So, it’s starting price plus baggage allowance, plus web booking fee, plus credit card fee and plus service charge fee! In the end we went direct with an airline and managed to keep the difference between the starting price and the final price to double! Anyway, it’s done and we can forget about till the evening of the flight when we have to do web check-in.

I’ve also bought some Euros (while the Aussie dollar is doing well) so that we land in Rome with some currency to pay for things like coffee & train tickets. I got ripped off last time by having to change some money at the railway station and getting charged way too much commission & don’t want that to happen again.

Oh, and conferences’ in Barcelona have been paid for and confirmed – sweet!

We might even do a test packing of the bags soon, to see if we’re going to manage to get all our stuff into one carry-on bag & our days packs…
